Most professional astronomers like me don’t perform our research with the telescopes connected to our institutes; these are too small, and generally the sites are too poor (in terms of the weather) to perform the sensitive observations we require. Instead they are used for teaching purposes. There are only a limited number of geographic locations that can host such facilities; put the best (optical) telescope in a place where it’s cloudy most of the time and you will have wasted your time and money.
Each detector is made of a semi-conductor, typically silicon-based; a photon hitting one of these detectors can generate a small electrical charge. The amount of charge generated per photon that hits the detector increases linearly, so if we bathe the chip with many photons – in other words, we ‘expose’ the ccd – we can build up a large charge that corresponds to the amount of light that hit it during the exposure time. Charge can be manipulated with voltages, and so, after a suitable exposure 61 stepping into the extragalactic universe time, we can ‘read out’ the charge in each pixel by shuffling the signal in each detector to the edges of the ccd, where it can be amplified electronically and passed through a converter that turns an analogue voltage into a digital number (called an adu).
