Predictive power resides, believe Fonagy et al. (1991: 901), not in the quality of the mother’s past experience ‘but in the overall organization of mental structures underlying relationships and attachment related issues’. Internal working models form within relationships and can, of course, be modified and ‘disconfirmed’ at any stage in the lifespan if individuals experience new, influential attachment relationships. They are, after all, ‘working’ models and can be modified if people begin to react in ways (both positively and negatively) that the model fails to predict or anticipate.

It is in these ways that the quality of external relationships gets on the child’s mental inside. As attachment relationships become psychologically internalised, the quality of a child’s social experiences becomes a mental property of that child. In turn, the mental inside influences the child’s view of the self and others. It affects behaviour, relationship style and social competence. Each of these affects the way in which the social world is perceived and dealt with. This is, in effect, a definition of personality: ‘the enduring patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior that are expressed in different circumstances’ (Westen 1996: 448).

Bowlby’s theoretical genius was therefore nicely complemented by Ainsworth’s empirical creativity. Her development of a practical measure of infant attachment behaviour allowed researchers to examine parent–child relationships in a rigorous, systematic and standardised way. As attachment behaviour is activated when the individual experiences anxiety, all assessment procedures involve introducing mild levels of attachment-related emotional distress to those under study. The way in which the individual responds to and handles this distress is taken to reveal the strategy that he or she typically uses to regulate arousal and raised affect.
